A heavyweight showdown is locked in for the fourth round as world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and 16th seed Naomi Osaka both advanced on Sunday.
However, the tournament lost a major star as Coco Gauff retired mid-match with a “scary” arm injury.
Sabalenka powered through eyeing her first Indian Wells title after two previous runner-up finishes.
After a second-set lapse, Osaka cited her daughter as motivation to “pick up her attitude” and dominate the decider.
Rising star Alexandra Eala moved on after Gauff suffered an injury that felt like “a firework going off” in her left arm.
The upcoming Sabalenka-Osaka clash marks the first meeting between the two four-time Grand Slam champions since 2018.
While Sabalenka seeks “revenge” for that previous loss, Osaka is finding her form after a recent abdominal injury.
Elsewhere, Amanda Anisimova routed Emma Raducanu 6-1, 6-1 in just 52 minutes, while Jasmine Paolini survived a three-set battle against Ajla Tomljanovic to reach the last 16.
