Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has insisted he meant no disrespect toward interim head coach Michael Carrick following a controversial Instagram post.
After United’s 2-1 loss to Newcastle—their first under Carrick—Scholes wrote that his former teammate had “something special” because the team had been “[expletive]” for four games.
The comment drew sharp criticism, with former defender Patrice Evra suggesting Scholes’ account might have been hacked.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes revealed he has since privately messaged Carrick to clear the air.
“It was in no way intended to be offensive,” Scholes explained. “The only thing I was saying was that I don’t think they played that well the last four games and he’s still managing to get results. I was saying he’s a very talented manager.”
Despite the recent dip in performance, United remain third in the Premier League. Fellow pundit Wes Brown admitted the post was easily misread, noting, “How I read it was as if he’s having a go at him.”
