Lamine Yamal Denies Newcastle With 96th-Minute Penalty

Newcastle United were seconds away from a historic Champions League victory over Barcelona before a 96th-minute Lamine Yamal penalty rescued a 1-1 draw for the visitors on Tuesday night.

The Magpies appeared to have secured a momentous first-leg advantage when Harvey Barnes fired home a first-time finish in the 85th minute, sending St James’ Park into a frenzy.

However, the drama peaked in the final seconds of stoppage time when Malick Thiaw tripped Dani Olmo in the box.

18-year-old Lamine Yamal stepped up to the spot, coolly sending Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way with the final kick of the game.

21-year-old Lewis Hall earned “outstanding” praise from Eddie Howe for neutralizing Yamal for the majority of the match.

Despite the late blow, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick admitted his side struggled, noting, “With the ball we didn’t make a good game… Newcastle have a lot of dynamic.”

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe was left “devastated” by the late twist but remained defiant ahead of the return leg.

“The way it ended is a tough one to take,” Barnes told TNT Sports. “But we are level in the tie and have everything to play for.”

Newcastle now travel to the Nou Camp next week needing a win to reach their first-ever Champions League quarter-final.
