In a night defined by the absence of injured stars Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde stepped out of the shadows to net a sensational first-half hat-trick, leading Real Madrid to a dominant victory over Manchester City at the Bernabéu.
Prior to Wednesday’s last-16 tie, the 27-year-old Uruguayan had not scored in his previous 26 Champions League games.
However, in 42 frantic minutes, the “most underrated player on the planet” made history.
He is only the second player ever to score a first-half hat-trick against English opposition in the Champions League, joining Lionel Messi (2010).
His third goal, a volley hammered past Gianluigi Donnarumma, left Bellingham “open-mouthed” in the stands.
Teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold hailed his work rate, noting, “He covers every blade of grass. You can always count on him.”
Valverde, who captained the side, attributed his relentless style to a “tough upbringing” on dirt pitches in Montevideo. “Sometimes my parents wouldn’t eat so I could,” he recalled. “Now, I sacrifice myself for the team.”
With the 15-time champions now a massive step closer to the quarter-finals, Valverde has officially traded his “underrated” tag for that of a bona fide Bernabéu hero.
