Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli has made Formula 1 history, becoming the youngest-ever polesitter at 19 years and 212 days old.
The Italian prodigy smashed Sebastian Vettel’s 18-year-old record by leading a Mercedes front-row lockout at the Chinese Grand Prix.
Despite the milestone, the session was nearly a disaster for the Silver Arrows.
George Russell (P2) suffered a gearbox failure during Q3, only returning to the track after mechanics “power-cycled” the car and swapped his steering wheel with moments to spare.
Antonelli capitalized on his teammate’s technical woes to claim the top spot by 0.222s.
Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc secured the second row, with Hamilton just 0.351s off pole.
A frustrated Max Verstappen qualified a distant 8th, describing his car as “completely undriveable” and nearly a second off the pace.
Piastri and Norris locked out the third row, keeping themselves in podium contention.
