Captain Ronald Araujo headed in João Cancelo’s corner after 24 minutes for the only goal.
Rayo threatened early through Carlos Martin, but keeper Joan Garcia denied him. Barca came close when Raphinha’s strike was tipped onto the bar, while Garcia later saved brilliantly from Unai Lopez.
Pacha Espino fired over late on as Barca held firm. The result puts pressure on Real Madrid, who face Atletico later on Sunday.
