Cubs Step Up AFCON U-17 Preparations as Camp Enters Third Week

Uganda’s U-17 boys national football team, the Cubs, have entered the third week of intensive residential training at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru as preparations gather pace ahead of the 2026 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Under the guidance of head coach Laryea Kingston, the youthful squad continues to undergo rigorous daily sessions aimed at sharpening tactical awareness and improving physical conditioning ahead of the continental showpiece.

Monday’s training marked another step forward in what has been a demanding build-up programme, following two weeks of structured work that included double sessions and two practice matches against Busoga United and Progressive High School.

Team captain Owen Mukisa remains optimistic about the squad’s progress, noting that the preparations are steadily shaping the team into a cohesive and competitive unit.

“We have trained for two weeks and played two practice matches. As a team, we are looking forward to AFCON, and the goal at the competition will be reaching the World Cup,” Mukisa said after Monday’s workout.

The Cubs began their residential camp earlier this month following the naming of a provisional squad, with players drawn from schools and academies across the country.

Since then, the focus has been on building chemistry, improving game intelligence, and enhancing match fitness ahead of the high stakes tournament.

Uganda secured their place at the finals after an impressive showing at the CECAFA U-17 Zonal Qualifiers, highlighted by a commanding semi final victory over Ethiopia.

The tournament in Morocco, scheduled from April 25 to May 15, will not only crown Africa’s youth champions but also serve as a qualification pathway to the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

With the countdown now in its final weeks, Kingston’s side is expected to maintain intensity in Njeru before heading to Ivory Coast for international friendlies that will offer further exposure and fine tuning.
