Plastic waste collected during the Rugby Africa Cup 2025 is continuing to deliver value months later, after Hariss International confirmed it has been recycled into coaching equipment now in use across Uganda.
The company, which sponsored the tournament through its Rock Boom brand, used waste gathered at Namboole Stadium to produce 180 coaching boards that have been handed over to the Uganda Rugby Union. The boards are already supporting training sessions, linking the Rugby Africa Cup directly to ongoing rugby development in the country.
The initiative turns one of Africa’s premier rugby events into a case study for sustainability, with plastic collected during the competition repurposed into practical tools rather than discarded. Some of the recycled material was also converted into everyday items such as phone stands, laptop stands, and flowerpots.
“At Hariss International, we believe that sustainability should go beyond conversation and translate into meaningful action. By transforming plastic waste collected during the Rugby Africa Cup into coaching boards for the Uganda Rugby Union, we are demonstrating that waste can indeed become opportunity,” said Samuel Hooper, the company’s Head of Marketing.
The project reinforces how the Rugby Africa Cup’s impact is stretching beyond matchdays, with its environmental footprint now tied to grassroots rugby growth. It also forms part of Hariss International’s wider sustainability push, which has included distributing recycling bins to schools and institutions to promote responsible waste management.
