Uganda Martyrs University took a first-leg advantage in the University Football League quarterfinals after a 2–1 win over Muteesa I Royal University in the second game played on Wednesday.
Goals from Wanji Barnabas and Obedi Ronald gave Uganda Martyrs control of the tie, while Lutwama Ali pulled one back for Muteesa I Royal University from the penalty spot to keep the contest alive ahead of the return leg.
Uganda Martyrs head coach Eric Kisuze admitted his side was not at its best despite the result.
“Contrecation has lacked in players but we are happy that we have gone with first leg advantage. It will be hard game second leg but we will go through,” he said.
The result leaves Uganda Martyrs with a narrow edge heading into the second leg, with Muteesa I Royal University still within reach if they can overturn the deficit.
Action in the competition continues on Thursday, with last season’s finalists St Lawrence University set to host Ndejje University.
