The ruling NRM Parliamentary Caucus has resolved to support government funding for Uganda’s preparations to co‑host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, following CAF’s inspection report that flagged gaps in stadiums and supporting infrastructure.
Meeting at State House Entebbe on Friday, March 27, the caucus discussed AFCON readiness alongside other national priorities, including salary increases for primary and arts teachers and the Standard Gauge Railway project.
Insiders said members agreed to back allocations for sports infrastructure as part of the FY 2026/2027 budget.
President Museveni later confirmed the resolutions in a tweet, noting that the caucus had agreed to prioritize “peace and security, roads, electricity, the railway, scientific innovation, preparations for AFCON 2027, restocking in Teso, Lango and Acholi, and salary enhancement for teachers, TVET staff and security personnel.”
The move comes days after CAF’s February report highlighted serious compliance gaps at Uganda’s proposed AFCON venues.
Hoima City Stadium was found to require operational redesign, Mandela National Stadium’s 15‑month upgrade plan was deemed incompatible with tournament deadlines, and Akii Bua Stadium in Lira was left unverified as inspectors did not visit the site.
Sports Minister Peter Ogwang has since assured the public that government and contractors are addressing the issues.
He reported that Hoima’s contractor, Summa, is working to fix operational deficiencies, while SAMCO Construction has pledged to complete Akii Bua Stadium by October this year.
