Poland face Sweden on Tuesday at Solna’s Strawberry Arena, aiming to end a 96‑year winless run on Swedish soil and secure a World Cup spot in North America.
Their last victory in Sweden came in 1930, with eight defeats and two draws since.
Coach Jan Urban dismissed the weight of history, noting Poland’s 2‑0 playoff win over Sweden in 2022. Sweden, revitalized under Graham Potter, beat Ukraine 3‑1 in their semifinal, while Poland edged Albania 2‑1.
The clash could mark the end for Poland’s golden generation, with captain Robert Lewandowski, 37, nearing retirement and Piotr Zielinski still central at 31.
“The World Cup is the most important tournament in every footballer’s career,” winger Jakub Kaminski said. “Tomorrow we’ll play to fulfil our dreams and write more history.”
