Italy’s Sport Minister Andrea Abodi has called on football federation chief Gabriele Gravina to resign after the Azzurri missed a third straight World Cup, losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties in Tuesday’s play-offs.
Abodi said Italian football “must be rebuilt from the ground up,” while Gravina refused to step aside, insisting a board meeting next week will decide his future.
The defeat sparked fan anger, with eggs thrown at FIGC headquarters in Rome. Gravina admitted the sport is in “a profound crisis” but blamed politicians for offering little support, drawing sharp rebukes from Abodi and athletes who defended Italy’s success in other sports.
The clash highlights deep divisions over accountability as Italian football faces calls for sweeping reform.
