Daniil Medvedev endured the first 6-0 6-0 defeat of his career as Matteo Berrettini dismantled the world number 10 in under 50 minutes at the Monte Carlo Masters.
The Russian, who has long derided clay as “a surface for losers,” lost his composure after dropping the opening set and an early break in the second, smashing his racquet repeatedly before snapping it in half.
Berrettini, a former Wimbledon finalist returning from injury, called it “one of the best performances of my life,” missing only three shots across the match.
Medvedev’s collapse featured 28 unforced errors, five double faults and just four points won behind his second serve.
The Italian wildcard moves on to face Brazil’s Joao Fonseca, while fellow top seed Andrey Rublev also fell early, beaten 6-4 6-1 by Belgium’s Zizou Bergs.
