Bushenyi to Host Sheema as Ankole Cup 2026 Fixtures Confirmed

The Ankole Cup 2026 has been officially unveiled, with hosts Bushenyi District set to face Sheema District in the opening match on June 6 at Bushenyi Main Stadium.

The launch, held on Saturday in Mbarara City, confirmed that this year’s tournament will feature 13 districts from across the Ankole sub-region, continuing its growth as one of western Uganda’s leading football competitions.

The opening round fixtures will follow immediately after the curtain-raiser, with Ibanda hosting Kazo on June 7, Mbarara City taking on Kashari on June 8, and Mitooma facing Buhweju on June 9. Early attention will also focus on Group C, which includes Isingiro, Rwampara, Mbarara City, and Kashari, and is widely viewed as the most competitive pool.

Key matches in that group include Mbarara City against Kashari on June 8, Rwampara versus Isingiro on June 12, and a series of decisive fixtures involving Mbarara City through to July 4 that are expected to shape qualification.

The knockout stage will begin with the quarterfinal first legs on July 18, before the final is held on August 16 at Kabwohe Stadium.

Beyond competition, the Ankole Cup remains a key development platform in the region. The tournament has consistently produced players who progress to the Uganda Premier League and FUFA Big League, while districts such as Mbarara City, Bushenyi, Sheema, Ntungamo, and Ibanda continue to stand out for their strong football structures and support.

Organisers are yet to confirm prize money for the 2026 edition, but the tournament’s commercial profile continues to rise, with selected matches, including the opener, semifinals, and final, set for live television broadcast. Increased visibility is expected to attract sponsors, improve gate revenue, and enhance financial returns for participating teams.

Districts will also benefit from logistical support, match bonuses, and greater player exposure, while the competition continues to draw scouts and local sponsors.

The tournament’s impact extends beyond football, with match days generating business for transport operators, vendors, and hospitality providers in host towns, while also strengthening regional identity and unity.

With fixtures confirmed, attention now turns to Bushenyi Main Stadium, where Bushenyi and Sheema will open the 2026 campaign.
