Lira Town College has confirmed it is over 90% prepared to host the 2026 National USSSA Football Championship (boys), which kicks off in early May. This marks the first time the prestigious school games will be staged in the Lango region.
Following an inspection by the USSSA secretariat, the school was cleared to host the tournament.
Headteacher Mr. Levi Abongo said preparations began immediately after the college was selected, including grading and planting grass on the playground, which is now fully green.
Accommodation facilities have been upgraded, with five tiled dormitory blocks for boys awaiting final paintwork, alongside five blocks for girls.
Water and sanitation have also been improved, with three reliable sources—tap water, a motorised well, and a borehole—ensuring supply. New toilets and tiled kitchens are ready for use. Mr. Abongo appealed to the Lira City and Lango community to welcome visitors warmly during the games.
On the pitch, head coach Patrick Bongo expressed confidence in his squad, noting their 1-0 friendly win over eastern powerhouse Amus College and a strong defensive record in the district tournament. He recalled the school’s famous 2018 upset of St. Mary’s Kitende, saying his team is determined to make history again by bringing the trophy to Northern Uganda for the first time.
Team captain Emmanuel Junior Opak echoed the optimism, stating the players are fully equipped and motivated to make both the school and the region proud.
