The Federation of Uganda Football Associations has confirmed former Crested Cranes captain Christine Wanyana as the draw assistant for the FUFA Women’s Cup, scheduled for Monday, April 13 at 10:00 AM.
The draw, which will be broadcast live on FUFA TV, will set the fixtures for the seventh edition of the competition, with 40 clubs confirmed to take part.
Wanyana, a former long-serving captain of the national team, is widely regarded as one of the key figures in the development of women’s football in Uganda. She led the Crested Cranes during their return to international competition in 2016, captaining the side at the CECAFA Women’s Championship and in several international friendlies.
At club level, she featured for Buikwe She Red Stars during the early years of the FUFA Women Elite League before retiring from international football in 2017.
Since then, Wanyana has moved into coaching and is now among the most qualified female coaches in the country, holding a CAF ‘A’ Coaching Licence. Her appointment for the draw is part of FUFA’s efforts to recognise former players who have contributed to the growth of the women’s game.
The draw will determine the match-ups for the preliminary round, which will involve 32 teams drawn from the Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League, FUFA Women Elite League, regional competitions, and one non-league side.
Since its launch in 2017, the competition has produced a range of winners. Olila High School WFC claimed the inaugural title, followed by UCU Lady Cardinals FC and Makerere University WFC in 2018 and 2019 respectively. The tournament was suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It returned in 2023 with Uganda Martyrs High School WFC lifting the title, before She Corporate FC won in 2024. Amus College WFC are the current holders heading into the 2025/26 edition.
