A Championship rugby league fixture in Goole was thrown into chaos on Sunday after a suspected grenade was discovered near the pitch, forcing an 80‑minute delay.
The device was found close to the athletics track at Victoria Pleasure Ground shortly before the scheduled 15:00 BST kick‑off between Goole Vikings and Whitehaven.
Police imposed a cordon and called in specialists, while the club urged fans not to arrive until 16:00.
Humberside Police later confirmed the item was a non‑explosive replica, which was safely removed. Play eventually began at 16:20, with supporters returning to the ground shortly before.
Goole thanked players, staff and fans for their patience during the disruption. Whitehaven went on to secure a 36–22 victory, leaving the Vikings 18th in the Championship table.
