Scotland captain Andrew Robertson will carry the memory of his late Liverpool team‑mate Diogo Jota into the World Cup.
Jota, who died in a car crash last July aged 28, never played at the tournament despite 49 Portugal caps.
His widow Rute Cardoso wrote to Robertson: “You’ll be taking his dream with you too… Diogo will be with you in your thoughts, in your steps, in your heart.”
Robertson, now at Tottenham, said the words will stay with him “for a very long time” as Scotland prepare for their first World Cup since 1998.
They face Haiti, Morocco and Brazil in Group C. “I’m not only just playing for me,” Robertson added. “I’m playing for both of us.”
