Ugandan athlete Leonard Chemutai has finished 15th in the Men’s 3000m steeplechase final at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, clocking a time of 8:20.03.
Chemutai’s performance was marked by resilience as he recovered from an unfortunate fall towards the final lap at Stade de France.
Chemutai began the race with a strong pace, but his momentum was interrupted when he fell after being stepped on while going over a barrier with 480 meters left.
Despite the setback, he demonstrated remarkable determination by getting back up and completing the race.
The final also witnessed a severe incident involving Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma, who suffered a bad fall and was removed from the track by medics.
Morocco’s El Bakkali claimed the gold medal with a time of 8:06.05, while Kenneth Rooks from the USA and Kenya’s Abraham Kibiwot secured silver and bronze respectively.
Chemutai’s journey to the final was impressive. He secured his spot with a standout performance in Heat 1, finishing second with a season-best time of 8:18.19.
Despite finishing 15th in the final, Chemutai’s resilience and perseverance were on full display, and he bows out of this year’s Olympics a fighter.
Prior to the Olympic Games, the 21-year old athlete clinched the gold medal in the 3000m steeplechase at the African Championships in Douala, Cameroon, in June.
He also won the U20 classic mountain race at the Trail World Championships in 2022, followed by a victory in the senior race at the same championships in 2023.
