I’m Going for Paralympic Gold – Mbaziira

As the 2024 Paralympic Games approach, set to be hosted in Paris, France, over 4,400 athletes from around the world are gearing up to compete. Among them are four athletes from Uganda, who were officially flagged off on Friday, August 23rd, by the State Minister for Sport, Hon. Peter Ogwang.

In an exclusive interview, Uganda’s first powerlifter to compete in the Paralympics, Dennis Mbaziira, shared that he has never been more prepared for a tournament. “I’m happy that this time, I arrived for the tournament early enough, unlike before when I would get there just a day or two before the competition,” Mbaziira said.

Despite having a disabled leg, Mbaziira always carries a positive attitude. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent Uganda at the Paralympics, noting that his participation will inspire young boys in Uganda who may have similar disabilities.

When asked about his goals for the competition, Mbaziira said that simply qualifying is an achievement in itself, but he would be the happiest Ugandan if he wins the gold medal in powerlifting.

Mbaziira will compete in the 88kg category, where he is currently ranked 16th in the world.

Team Uganda:

Dennis Mbaziira – Para Powerlifting
Husnah Kukundakwe – Para Swimming
David Emong – Para Athletics
Peace Oroma – Para Athletics
