Dan Wagaluka: The plight of a retired footballer

The name Dan Wagaluka can not be quickly forgotten in Ugandan football. Operating swiftly from the right wing, the diminutive winger was a joy to watch in his prime days.

His playing career has seen him feature for 12 clubs including AFC Leopards, APR Kigali, URA and SC Villa where he won three league titles, but his best moment he says came from Inverness, a Scottish club where he spent two weeks on trials

“The one moment I remember was at Inverness in Scotland. It was a dream come true for me playing for a European club, but also the organization of their dressing rooms was phenomenal.”

Including Tony Mawejje, Denis Onyago and Ibra Ssekajja, Wagaluka has shared a dressing room with some of the best both at club level and in national team colours. One in particular comes out as his favourite teammate.

“My favourite teammate in the national team was David Obua. He was so kind to me. He was also a very simple and funny person.”

During his productive days, the 35-year-old relished a fruitful life. His financial status was one admired by his peers. Presently, it is the total opposite as the player who once earned in dollars is jobless and struggling to make ends meet. He seeks out for help.

“I don’t have a job. If there’s anyone out there willing to employ me, I will work. I’m a very hardworking man. I can do presenting like you’re doing now. I’m also a driver.

“The problem with Ugandans is they easily forget about their ex-internationals which is not the case in Europe. They completely forget about you and only remember you when they see you on TV.”

Like Wagaluka, most retired Ugandan footballers have little or nothing to show for their sweat. It is saddening to know that after enjoying illustrious careers, they end up living regrettably after.
