Uganda Cranes strikers Muhammad Shaban and Steven Mukwala were in action on Sunday with their clubs in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Shaban’s Al Hilal Benghazi hosted and defeated Egyptian side Al Masry 3-2 at Martyrs of February Stadium, Benina in Libya.
Al Hilal trailed twice in Sunday’s bout but were able to come out victorious. Salah Mohsen broke the deadlock at the stroke of halftime for the visitors to lead at the interval.
Mohammed Eshtewi equalised for the hosts in the 64th minute before Mohsen restored Al Masry’s lead in the 69th minute and that was his second goal of the match.
Faisal Elbadry levelled matters once again for Al Hilal in the 72nd minute, and Eshtewi completed his brace in the 85th minute to earn the Libyan side a hard-fought victory.
It is important to note that Shaban did not feature through injury suffered while on national duty with the Cranes.
It should also be noted that it is Al Hilal that ended Uganda Cup winners Kitara’s journey in the first phase of the preliminary round.
As Shaban was absent for Al Hilal, Mukwala was, on the other hand, named amongst the substitutes for Simba in a 0-0 draw away to Al Ahly Tripoli in Libya.
It’s one fixture away from the group stages, and therefore, Shaban and Mukwala will know their fate next week in the second leg of the second round of the preliminary round.
