Kenya’s Coach Defiant Ahead of Cameroon Clash

Kenya’s head coach, Engin Fırat, has expressed unwavering confidence in his team’s ability to upset five-time African champions Cameroon in their upcoming TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 qualifiers.

The matches are set to take place on October 7 and 15 with Kenya hosting the game at Namboole Stadium in Uganda, due to Kenya’s lack of a CAF-approved facility.

The Harambee Stars have enjoyed a successful start to their qualifying campaign, collecting four points from two matches.

Their recent victory over Namibia away from home marked a historic milestone for the team.

“Do you think we are easy to play against?” Fırat questioned. “Cameroon should think about how they want to crack us. So I’m not afraid of Cameroon. You saw how the boys played against Cote d’Ivoire, Russia, Qatar. So, if we have the boys together, they are very united and they believe in each other.”

The Turkish coach’s optimism stems from Kenya’s impressive performance under his guidance. The team has remained unbeaten in 2024 and has shown significant improvement in their attacking play.

“Let’s face the reality, the boys are unbeaten this year,” Fırat added. “They have won outside Kenya for the first time, and they managed to win a cup. We got one goal against Namibia otherwise in this season here in six matches, we got three goals. We scored ten goals.”

The upcoming clashes against Cameroon are expected to draw massive crowds, especially considering the Indomitable Lions’ popularity in Uganda thanks to Manchester United’s Andrey Onana.

Manchester United fans based in the country turned out in droves to support Cameroon when they faced Zimbabwe at Namboole in the past international break with the fans singing Onana’s name throughout the game.
