Woodball Takes Root in Uganda: Junior Team Set for World Cup Debut

Woodball, a relatively new sport in Uganda, is rapidly gaining popularity across the country, thanks in part to the efforts of the Woodball Association and the support of educational institutions like Shekinah Glory International School.

As a testament to the sport’s growth, a team of nine junior woodball players from Shekinah Glory International School has been selected to represent Uganda at the upcoming Woodball World Cup championship in China.

The team is scheduled to depart for China on October 10th.

“The rapid spread of woodball across Uganda is a testament to the strength of our federation,” said Uthman Mugoya, President of the Woodball Association. “Shekinah Glory International School has been a key partner in this journey, and we are grateful for their support.”

Mugoya expressed confidence in the team’s preparedness, highlighting their progress since the introduction of woodball in the Mbale region. He acknowledged the crucial role played by parents in sponsoring these young talents.

While the senior team already has a sponsor, the junior team is still seeking funding for their travel to China. The Woodball Federation has committed to providing kits, equipment, feeding, and accommodation for the team.

Mugoya called for increased support for woodball, emphasizing its potential to become a dominant sport in Uganda and East Africa. He encouraged parents to allow their children to embrace the game, noting that it would be a source of national pride.

The junior team will undergo a two-week training camp starting this week and will participate in build-up games in Soroti on October 4th. With a balanced team of boys and girls, Mugoya is optimistic about their chances in the World Cup.
