The Nkumba University football team successfully landed in Lagos, Nigeria, to represent Uganda at the 11th All Africa University Games.
The team, flying aboard Uganda Airlines, is poised to make a strong showing and secure their place at the 2025 FISU World University Cup Football in Jinjiang, China.
The All-Africa University Games, a prestigious continental tournament, will be co-hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Lagos State University (LASU) from September 20 to 29, 2024.
With over 120 Nigerian universities and 36 others from across Africa participating, the event promises to be a fierce competition.
This marks Nigeria’s return to hosting the Games after a 20-year hiatus.
The UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, highlighted the cultural significance of the Games and its role in showcasing Nigeria’s rich heritage.
The joint hosting arrangement with LASU and the support of the Lagos State Government has helped to alleviate the logistical burden on UNILAG.
Joseph Awoyinfa, the Director of Sports at UNILAG, confirmed that all necessary facilities are in place to accommodate the various sports events.
UNILAG will host football, basketball, swimming, and tennis, while LASU will handle the indoor games. This joint hosting by two universities is a first for the All-Africa University Games.
