UPL: Newbies Hold Uganda’s Number One

Newly promoted Uganda Premier League side Lugazi have held Uganda’s best club Vipers to a 0-0 stalemate in Lugazi on Thursday.

News broke on Thursday morning that the Venoms were ranked 49th in the Africa in the latest rankings according to CAF.

This puts them ahead of every other club in Uganda given that they are the only team on the list from the Pearl of Africa.

However, their response is not what the club’s enthusiasts would have wished for on the day.

Lugazi started the season with back-to-back defeats at home against Kitara and away to UPDF, 3-0 and 1-0, respectively.

A point against the six-time UPL champions was therefore their maiden point in their history in the topflight given that this is their first season in the league.

On the other hand, the Venoms have now had a mixture of results after the three outings, losing, winning, and drawing one away to NEC, Express, and Lugazi, 3-1, 3-0, and 0-0, respectively.

The Kitende-based team is now positioned third on the 16-team log with four points while Lugazi remained rock bottom with a single point.

Vipers will host the defending champions Villa next on Saturday, October 5 whilst Lugazi will visit Maroons the following day on matchday four of the season.
