The national women’s chess team shone at the recently concluded 45th World Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary.
The team, facing significant visa delays, only entered the competition in the third round, missing the crucial opening matches.
Despite this setback, they displayed exceptional resilience and skill, securing a commendable final position amongst African nations.
Even without the opportunity for substitutions due to a player’s illness, the Ugandan ladies persevered. Their dedication was further rewarded with title recognition from the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
The Uganda Chess Federation is now calling for increased support from the Ugandan government, particularly the Ministry of Education and Sports and the National Council of Sports.
The UCF emphasizes the need for essential government funding to cover player allowances, celebrate the team’s accomplishments and further develop chess programs across Uganda.
