Mbekeka Shatters Glass Ceilings as UPL’s First Female Head Coach

Olivia Mbekeka has shattered barriers by becoming the first-ever female head coach in the Uganda Premier League (UPL).

This historic appointment follows the dismissal of Lugazi FC’s head coach, Sadiq Ssempigi, due to a string of poor results.

Mbekeka, who initially joined Lugazi FC as an assistant coach at the start of the 2024/25 season, now steps into the head coach role on an interim basis.

Her promotion comes after the club’s struggles, having only secured two points from five matches under Ssempigi’s leadership.

Lugazi FC’s recent performances included a 1-1 draw at home against Mbarara City FC and a goalless stalemate with Vipers SC.

However, defeats to Kitara FC (3-0), Maroons FC (1-0), and UPDF FC (1-0) contributed to Ssempigi’s exit.

Mbekeka, a former player for the Uganda national women’s team, the Crested Cranes, is no stranger to breaking new ground.

She became the second female assistant coach in the UPL after Kitara FC’s Sharon Achieng, and the first to rise to head coach status.

Her first task will be an away fixture against Express FC on Tuesday, October 22.

This marks a significant moment in Ugandan football, with Mbekeka paving the way for future female coaches in a male-dominated league.
