Rugby Cranes Narrowly Fall to Kenya Simbas in Elgon Cup First Leg

The Uganda Rugby Cranes will have all to play for in Kampala when they host Kenya Simbas for the return leg of the Elgon Cup 2024 next Saturday.

This is after they suffered a narrow 27-25 defeat to Kenya in Nairobi, leaving them trailing by just two points on aggregate, but keeping the dream of claiming this year’s overall title within reach.

Tolbert Onyango: From Kenya Schoolboy to Ugandan Rugby Icon

The tightly contested first leg at the RFUEA Grounds earlier today saw Uganda fall short, but not without a display of grit and determination.

Both teams traded leads throughout, with Uganda managing a brief advantage at halftime, leading 14-12.

The first half began with Kenya seizing momentum, as Griffin Chao’s try gave the hosts an early lead.

Uganda had two early opportunities to respond through penalty kicks, yet both rebounded off the posts, leaving Kenyan fans relieved.

Eventually, Uganda settled into their stride, finding the opening they needed in the 33rd minute when Pius Ogena crossed the try line to get Uganda on the scoreboard.

With the Kenyan crowd roaring, Uganda did not relent, intensifying their offensive efforts and pinning Kenya deep in their own territory.

A well-executed series of passes led to Innocent Gwokto powering through the Kenyan defense, and a successful conversion pushed Uganda ahead just before the break.

However, Kenya reclaimed control after the interval, responding to Uganda’s lead with a try by Brian Wahinya that sent the home crowd into a frenzy.

Wahinya’s efforts were crucial as he later scored another try, giving Kenya a 24-17 lead.

Despite trailing, Uganda’s resilience came through, with Robin Philip Odrua narrowing the gap with a try, though a missed conversion left them chasing a five-point deficit.

Late in the game, a penalty from Kubu extended Kenya’s lead to 27-22, but Uganda answered with a penalty kick of their own, closing in at 27-25.

The final minutes were tense, yet Uganda was unable to find a winning score, leaving Kenya to celebrate a narrow victory.

The two-point deficit, however, sets up a thrilling second leg, as Uganda aims to capitalize on home advantage to overturn the aggregate score.

Fans in Kampala will be eagerly awaiting this clash, with both teams vying for Elgon Cup glory and the Rugby Cranes ready to push for a comeback.
