Uganda’s national women’s rugby sevens team, the Lady Rugby Cranes have advanced to the quarter-finals at the 2024 Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens Tournament in Accra, Ghana.
This is after they topped Pool C after Day One, with dominant victories over Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Zambia, and conceded only seven points across three games.
In their opening match at Ghana Rugby Stadium, the Lady Rugby Cranes secured a decisive 48-00 victory over Ivory Coast.
Leading scorers included Maimuna Nassozi, Lydia Namabiro, Unity Namulala, Peace Lekuru, and Grace Auma, who combined for seven tries, with an additional penalty try awarded in the second half.
Following this, the Lady Rugby Cranes continued their winning streak by overpowering Senegal with a 39-00 scoreline.
In this encounter, Uganda’s try scorers included Lydia Namabiro, Unity Namulala, Maimuna Nassozi, and captain Peace Lekuru, while Tina Akello successfully converted three attempts.
Uganda closed out the pool stage with a 31-07 win over Zambia, showcasing a well-rounded offensive and defensive effort.
Lydia Namabiro and Grace Auma each scored twice, with Peace Lekuru also adding to the tally, while Akello continued her accuracy with three conversions.
With their flawless performance, the Lady Rugby Cranes have secured a place in the quarterfinals, where they will face Tunisia.
Tunisia advanced as the second-placed team from Pool A, having lost to South Africa, and the quarterfinal clash is scheduled for tomorrow at 12:22 pm EAT.
