Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has sparked controversy by singling out Uganda among four nations for failing to cast votes for Vinicius Junior during the 2024 Ballon d’Or voting.

The outspoken criticism came after Manchester City’s Rodri clinched the prestigious award, leaving many in the football world debating the merits of the decision.

During an event, Perez accused journalists from Uganda, Namibia, Albania, and Finland of neglecting Vinicius Junior, suggesting their votes cost the Real Madrid star the award.

“If the journalists from Namibia, Uganda, Albania, and Finland had not voted, Vinicius would be the Ballon d’Or [winner]. These countries did not give Vinicius a single vote,” Perez declared.

The Real Madrid chief expressed frustration over the Ballon d’Or voting system, questioning the credibility of voters from less prominent footballing nations.

He added that one journalist from Finland had resigned over the issue, implying the need for a system overhaul to include only those with “recognized prestige.”

Vinicius Junior delivered an exceptional 2023/24 season, leading Real Madrid to Champions League and La Liga glory.

Despite his performances, Rodri’s contributions to Manchester City’s fourth consecutive Premier League title and Spain’s UEFA European Championship win were deemed more impactful by voters.

However, Perez argued that the current voting system undermines the award’s credibility. He called for coaches and respected figures in football to oversee voting, ensuring accountability and transparency.
