Ivan Ahimbisibwe’s second-half heroics propelled URA to a dominant 3-0 victory over Wakiso Giants in a Uganda Premier League clash at the Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium on Wednesday.
Ahimbisibwe’s brace, scored within a span of seven minutes, not only secured three crucial points for the tax collectors but also elevated him to joint top scorer in the league with seven goals, tying with SC Villa’s Charles Lwanga.
The win lifts URA to fifth place on the table with 14 points from 10 games, while Wakiso Giants continue their downward spiral, languishing in 13th position with nine points and extending their winless run to seven matches.
Heading into the fixture, URA, coached by Alex Isabirye, was under pressure to recover from back-to-back losses against Maroons (2-1) and Vipers (2-0).
The visitors displayed their intent early, controlling possession and testing Wakiso’s fragile defense.
Their efforts paid off in the 42nd minute when Godfrey Ssekibengo slotted home to give URA a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, Ahimbisibwe took centre stage.
He doubled URA’s advantage in the 57th minute and sealed the victory in the 64th minute with a clinical finish that left Wakiso’s home fans in disarray.
The Purple Sharks have now conceded 17 goals in 10 matches—more than any other team this season.
Their leaky backline has allowed nine goals in just the last two games, raising concerns for coach Steven Bengo as his side continues to struggle at both ends of the pitch.
Despite brief moments of attacking promise, Wakiso failed to convert their chances and have managed just one goal in their last seven outings.
The loss further compounds their troubles as they fight to avoid being dragged into the relegation zone.
URA’s resurgence now reignites their hopes of challenging for a top-four finish.
They will look to build on this momentum in their next encounter, when they host NEC in what promises to be a tricky encounter.
Wakiso Giants, on the other hand, must regroup quickly to halt their alarming slide when they travel to Police in their next fixture on December 4.
