Ugandan athlete Private Chemutai Leonard, a member of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), has won a silver medal in the 3000m steeplechase at the ongoing Africa Military Games in Abuja, Nigeria.
The race that happened on Wednesday evening saw Kenya’s Simon Koich claim the gold medal.
Chemutai has already been an African champion, winning the Men’s 3000m steeplechase in the African Athletics Championships in Cameroon in June this year.
This latest medal adds to the UPDF’s growing medal tally at the games, with the force’s athletes consistently delivering strong performances in various disciplines.
Last weekend, the UPDF marathon team had already made their mark. Private Cheptoyek Ruth and Sergeant Chebet Emily clinched silver and bronze medals respectively in the grueling 42km marathon.
Cheptoyek finished with a time of 2:35:00, while Chebet clocked 2:38:00. Tanzania’s TPDF team secured the gold medal.
The 2nd edition of the Africa Military Games officially kicked off on November 20, 2024, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria. This edition marks the return of the games after a 22-year hiatus.
The games are aimed at promoting military cooperation, cultural exchange, and unity among African nations. Various sports events are being held, including athletics, boxing, football, and shooting.
Several African countries are participating in the games, with teams competing for medals and glory. The event is expected to conclude on November 30, 2024.
