Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff recently sparked controversy with comments about Formula 1 drivers having a “shelf life,” particularly in light of Lewis Hamilton’s age.
The 39-year-old seven-time world champion is set to join Ferrari next season.
Wolff clarified his remarks in a recent interview, stating that he and Hamilton had a frank discussion about the matter. He emphasized that the comment was taken out of context and that he holds Hamilton in high regard as one of the greatest drivers of all time.
“Lewis and I spoke about it,” Wolff explained. “One sentence in a book, and there were 99 sentences around the Brazil weekend and quotes in some interviews that I have given about Lewis where I clearly remark that he is the greatest driver of all time.”
Wolff also acknowledged that even the most talented drivers eventually face performance decline, including himself as a team principal.
He expressed his support for Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari and wished him well.
“We embark on a new future with our young drivers,” Wolff said. “At the same time, we wish Lewis all the best and happiness – and maybe a car that is not so fast.”
