Crested Cranes Begin WAFCON Quest Against Ethiopia

The road to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 has been set, with Uganda slated to face Ethiopia in the first round of qualifiers.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the draw on Thursday, as 38 countries vie for a spot in the tournament set to be hosted by Morocco for a third consecutive time.

Uganda will play Ethiopia in a two-legged tie between February 17-26, 2025. If victorious, the Crested Cranes will face the winner of the Tanzania vs. Equatorial Guinea matchup in the second round of qualifiers scheduled for October 2025. Only 11 teams will join hosts Morocco at the tournament.

The qualifiers will be challenging, with powerhouses like Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Ghana, Cameroon, and Ivory Coast granted byes to the second round.

For Uganda, the road to WAFCON 2026 presents an opportunity to secure a second appearance at the continental showpiece, having previously competed in the 2022 edition.

The timing of the 2026 finals remains unconfirmed, but Morocco will host the 2024 WAFCON tournament from July 5-26 next year, following a delay caused by the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
