FIFA Rankings: Uganda’s Position in Global, African, and CECAFA Standings

Uganda will close 2024 ranked 88th in the latest FIFA World Rankings, released on Thursday, December 19.

The Uganda Cranes remain in the same position as the previous rankings, reflecting a steady but unremarkable end to the year.

AFCON Qualification Highlights Cranes’ 2024

Despite the lack of movement in the rankings, the Cranes enjoyed a positive year on the pitch, highlighted by their qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Paul Put’s side secured their spot in the tournament as runners-up in Group K, amassing 13 points—only one point behind group leaders South Africa.

Impressively, Uganda registered the highest points tally among all teams that qualified in second place, a testament to their consistent performances during the campaign.

Regional and Continental Standings

While Uganda remains 88th globally, they hold their position as the 19th-ranked team in Africa.

In the CECAFA region, Uganda continues to lead, ahead of regional rivals like Kenya and Tanzania.

Globally, Argentina retains the top spot in the FIFA rankings, with Morocco maintaining their position as Africa’s best-ranked team.

Looking Ahead

As 2025 approaches, Uganda’s focus will shift to hosting CHAN, World Cup qualifiers, and preparations for the AFCON tournament, set to kick off in December in Morocco.

The Cranes aim to not only improve their rankings but also make a lasting impact on the continental stage.

Quick Facts

Current FIFA Ranking: 88th globally

Africa Ranking: 19th

CECAFA Region: 1st

Group K AFCON Qualifiers: 2nd place (13 points)

The Uganda Cranes and their fans will hope to carry the momentum into 2025 and climb higher in both the rankings and African football.
