State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang has revealed that Uganda is in the final stages of preparing for the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), with defending champions Senegal expressing interest in holding a pre-tournament training camp in the country.
Speaking to the media at Namboole Stadium, Ogwang confirmed that while the tournament draws are yet to be conducted, Senegal has requested to camp in the country to hold preparatory drills.
“Despite the fact that the draws haven’t been held yet, the defending champions Senegal have asked to come and train in Uganda ahead of CHAN 2024,” Ogwang stated.
The minister outlined the government’s extensive efforts to upgrade sporting facilities ahead of the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania from February 1st to 28th, 2025.
Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku has undergone significant improvements, including upgrades to the dressing rooms and the introduction of movable goalposts to meet CAF standards.
Additionally, other training grounds such as Kampala International School Uganda (KISU) and Kadiba have been refurbished to provide high-quality facilities for participating teams.
“The government has done a lot to prepare us for CHAN 2024,” Ogwang emphasized. “Muteesa II Stadium now has uplifted dressing rooms, and we’ve introduced movable goalposts. Other grounds like KISU and Kadiba have also undergone upgrades.”
Senegal, who won the 2022 CHAN tournament by defeating Algeria, is among the favorites for the 2024 edition.
The official CHAN 2024 draw will be held on Wednesday January 15 in Nairobi and will determine which teams Uganda will host for the tournament.
