Middle Fingers, Social Media Attacks, and WhatsApp Wars: Why Mbale Heroes Suspended Their Coach

Mbale Heroes Football Club on Wednesday January 15th officially parted ways with head coach Asaph Mwebaze after reaching a mutual agreement to terminate his contract.

The announcement that came in the evening hours follows Mwebaze’s recent suspension for alleged professional misconduct, as confirmed by the club’s chairman, Andrew Wambi.

Mwebaze was suspended on December 27, 2024, for a period of 28 days, pending investigations into accusations of unethical behavior and professional misconduct.

The allegations stemmed from his reported attacks on the club’s leadership and fans via social media and a confrontation with fans following a 4-0 home defeat to Vipers.

Mbale Heroes have struggled this season, winning just two of their 15 matches in the Uganda Premier League, with three draws and ten losses.

The team sits at the bottom of the table with nine points.

Despite these challenges, the club acknowledged Mwebaze’s contributions during his tenure, particularly his role in the Big League.

“Coach Asaph Mwebaze has been an integral part of our team, and we sincerely acknowledge his dedication and contributions,” the club’s statement read.

This termination marks the end of a turbulent stint for Mwebaze, who faced resistance from fans unhappy with his reappointment after former coach Richard Malinga’s exit.

In the interim, the assistant coaching staff will oversee training and match preparations as the club searches for a new head coach to steer the team forward.

The club called for unity and support from all stakeholders during this transition.

“We thank you all for your understanding and continued support. Let’s work together to ensure that the club remains the beacon of pride for our community,” said chairman Wambi.
