In a move that could benefit both player and club, Newcastle United and Atlanta United have reportedly reached an agreement for the transfer of Paraguayan winger Miguel Almiron.

The 30-year-old is set to return to his former club in a deal worth $12 million, marking a return to the side he left for the Premier League in 2019.

Almiron’s time at Newcastle United has been a mixed bag. While he has made a significant number of appearances (223) and contributed to the team’s offense with 30 goals and 12 assists, he has struggled to secure regular playing time under manager Eddie Howe this season.

With only 150 minutes of Premier League action under his belt, Almiron has reportedly fallen out of favor and is seeking a fresh start.

Almiron’s return to Atlanta United comes nearly five years after he departed the club for a then-club-record transfer to Newcastle.

During his first stint with Atlanta, Almiron was a key player in their 2018 MLS Cup triumph. His return is expected to bring not only experience but also a spark of attacking flair to the Atlanta United side.

The transfer is seen as a win-win for both clubs. Newcastle United will gain some financial flexibility with the sale of Almiron, whose contract was nearing its end.

The freed-up space in the squad could also pave the way for potential new signings that align with Eddie Howe’s vision for the team. Reports suggest that Turkish forward Semih Kilicsoy from Besiktas could be a target for the Magpies.

However, given their current strong form (seven wins in their last eight Premier League matches), Newcastle might also choose to rely on their existing squad depth.

With Almiron’s departure confirmed, Newcastle United will now focus on their upcoming matches against Fulham in the Premier League and the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal.

It remains to be seen whether the club will bring in a replacement or stay the course with their in-form lineup.
