The Stage is set for an action packed Sunday as the SMACK League, one of Uganda’s premier school alumni sports leagues, culminates its Season 7 with a grand finale at Legends Rugby Grounds.
Football enthusiasts, fun-seekers, and Guinness aficionados are expected to converge for an action-packed day of competition, entertainment, and premium experiences.
The league, sponsored by Guinness, has witnessed significant growth and excitement throughout the season.
A restructured format, featuring 22 teams battling it out in Pool A and Pool B, along with a tiered knockout system, has created a series of thrilling matchups leading to this momentous finale.
The day’s highlights include the Champion’s Shield final between the Knights and the Alks, the Founder’s Cup final pitting the Kiama Warriors against the Cyclones, and the interhouse competition clash between Lourdel and Mugwanya.
“We have been part of the SMACK League journey for over four seasons, and it has been nothing short of incredible,” said Mercy Atwongyeirwe, Project Manager, Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL). “As we wrap up this season, fans can expect an unforgettable experience filled with premium vibes, discounted Guinness, and an amazing entertainment lineup. Football fans will also have a chance to view the Premier League matches on Sunday from right here at Legends.”
The league’s innovative approach extends to Esports as well, mirroring the football format.
The TSL Esports Champion’s Shield final will see the Gladiators face the Phantoms, while the Mafiaz and the Pirates will battle it out for the Esports Founder’s Cup.
Beyond the competition, the SMACK League has also demonstrated its commitment to player development.
The recent recruitment of Romeo, a striker from the Vulcan Class of 2019, to GK Academy in Ghana, underscores the league’s role in nurturing talent.
“Having spent four years honing his skills in the league, Romeo’s journey stands as a testament to the opportunities the SMACK League provides for passionate players,” said Bernad Mukasa, CEO SMACK League Organizing Committee. “We are hopeful that Romeo’s efforts will encourage others to continue pursuing their passion for football through the league.”
The grand finale will also feature the presentation of Certificates of Excellence to outstanding individuals and teams. Awards will be given for categories such as Golden Boot Winner, Best Goalkeeper, Most Valuable Player, Champions, Runners-Up, and the Fair Play Award.
“We are immensely proud of the growth and success witnessed in the SMACK League this season,” added Mukasa. “The revamped format, the dedication of the players, the enthusiasm of the fans and the overall sportsmanship displayed have truly made this exceptional.”
