Potter Returns to Stamford Bridge with West Ham

Graham Potter returns to Stamford Bridge on Monday night for the first time since his dismissal as Chelsea manager, as his new side, West Ham, takes on his former club.

In a candid pre-match interview, Potter, 49, expressed gratitude for his time at Chelsea, despite its abrupt end, and emphasized the valuable lessons he learned during his tumultuous seven-month tenure.

Potter’s time at Chelsea was marked by both highs and lows.

While he guided the team to the Champions League quarter-finals, he struggled to integrate a bloated squad assembled by the club’s new ownership, often facing challenges with player management and even requiring players to change in the training ground corridors.

Reflecting on this period, Potter acknowledged the difficulties, stating, “You know in a football life you’re going to get ups and downs and it was a period of time that, of course, I would have wanted it to go better at the time. Absolutely. And I didn’t want to lose my job.”

However, Potter’s perspective on his Chelsea experience is one of growth and learning. He emphasized the importance of challenging experiences in personal development, saying, “Sometimes the experiences that are more traumatic and the more tougher and the more intense, they’re the ones that, if you can allow them to, can make the biggest difference in terms of growth and development.”

He added, “I just look at it as a learning experience. I’ve got no bad feelings towards Chelsea, I’ve still got a lot of good relationships with the people there. I wish them well apart from when we play them, of course.”

Now at West Ham, Potter is focused on building a successful future with the club.

He spoke about connecting with the supporters, working with the team, and creating something to be proud of.

Looking ahead to the match against Chelsea, Potter remains uncertain about the reception he will receive from the Stamford Bridge crowd.

However, his focus remains on his team’s performance. West Ham received a boost with the quicker-than-expected return of Jarrod Bowen from a broken foot.

The captain could be included in the squad for Monday’s game. However, Potter is still facing concerns over the fitness of Lucas Paqueta, and Crysencio Summerville remains sidelined.

Despite their interest in bolstering their attack, West Ham are not anticipating a busy transfer deadline day.
