Elite Games Top Scorer Ariho Eyes Spot in Uganda’s Senior Squad

Rinah Ariho’s rapid ascent in Ugandan football has taken yet another major step forward as the 16-year-old striker continues to turn heads at both the school and national levels.

Following her standout performances at the 2024 Elite Games, where she emerged as the top scorer, Ariho’s call-up to the Crested Cranes provisional squad signaled her arrival on the big stage.

Despite missing out on the final squad for Uganda’s WAFCON qualifier against Algeria, the young forward gained invaluable experience training under head coach Sheryl Botes.

Now, with a second chance at the senior team as part of the 39-player squad set to face Ethiopia, Ariho is more determined than ever to make her mark.

Her journey from Mwanjari, Kabale, to national recognition has been nothing short of inspiring.

Playing barefoot with her older brother, Grant Agaba, in their childhood compound, Ariho developed a passion for the game that saw her earn a spot at Obumwe Football Academy.

Her skills quickly caught the attention of Boni Consilii Girls’ Vocational School, where she was offered a sports scholarship.

Ariho’s impact on the school football scene has been remarkable. She captained Boni Consilii to the USSSA Ball Games II U16 title in Soroti and finished as the top scorer at the Elite Games with eight goals.

These performances cemented her reputation as one of the brightest young talents in Ugandan women’s football.

Her first senior national team call-up initially brought nerves, but with time, Ariho adapted to training alongside some of her idols.

“At first, I was overwhelmed, but my teammates welcomed me warmly. The experience has been priceless,” she said.

Having already shone at the U17 level—scoring a hat trick against Namibia in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers—Ariho is eager to prove herself with the senior team.

With Uganda’s WAFCON journey set to begin, she hopes to continue her upward trajectory.

Balancing football with academics, Ariho is preparing for her Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams while training at Boni Consilii.
