Denis Omedi continued his fine scoring form in Rwanda, netting twice as APR edged Kiyovu Sports 2-1 to tighten the title race in the Rwanda Premier League.

The Ugandan forward, who joined APR in the January transfer window, was the hero of the night, helping the defending champions recover from an early setback.

Kiyovu took the lead in the 11th minute through David Niyo, but Omedi struck in the 25th minute to bring APR level before sealing his brace in the 41st minute.

Despite Kiyovu’s persistent push for an equaliser in the second half, Darko Novic’s side held firm to secure a crucial victory, moving up to 34 points from 16 games.

The result places APR just two points behind table leaders Rayon Sports, who have a game in hand with 36 points in 15 matches.

Omedi, a former Kitara striker and a Puskás Award nominee, has now scored three goals in as many appearances for APR.

He opened his account with a penalty on his debut in the Heroes Cup semi-finals against AS Kigali, a tournament APR went on to win after overcoming Police FC in the final.

Fellow Ugandan and former SC Villa forward Hakim Kiwanuka has also impressed since joining APR, delivering standout performances in all three of his appearances so far.

APR’s next challenge will be against third-placed AS Kigali on February 16th, a team they recently defeated in the Heroes Cup semis.

On their end today, AS Kigali secured a 1-0 win over Bugesera courtesy of a Haruna Niyonzima goal, taking their tally to 29 points.

A win for APR in their upcoming fixture would lift them to 37 points and widen the gap between them and AS Kigali to eight points.

Meanwhile, leaders Rayon Sports will be in action tomorrow against 10th-placed Musanze before taking on Kiyovu Sports on February 15th, a fixture that could shape the title race.
