Harambee Stars’ Olunga Addresses Critics Amidst Stellar Performances for Al Duhail

Harambee Stars captain and Al Duhail striker, Michael Olunga, has spoken out against the negativity he faces from some Kenyan football fans, despite his consistently impressive performances on the pitch.

The prolific goal scorer addressed the criticism via social media, hinting at a refusal to conform to certain expectations.

“When you choose to stick to your standards/lane and not conform to certain ideologies. But we move regardless,” Olunga posted on Twitter, seemingly referencing the scrutiny he endures.

His message followed a fan’s expression of confusion regarding the persistent criticism directed at the striker, highlighting the difficulty of professional football and Olunga’s personal achievements.

Olunga’s response underscores a long-standing issue. Despite a remarkable career, including a historic 28-goal haul in a single J1 League match for Kashiwa Reysol and a top scorer award in the 2020 season, the 30-year-old has often been the target of skepticism, particularly within sections of the Kenyan football community.

Some have questioned his choice to play in the Qatar Stars League, suggesting a move to a higher-profile European league would be more appropriate.

However, Olunga’s decision to remain with Al Duhail has been undeniably successful. He continues to be a key figure for the club, recently scoring his ninth goal of the current campaign in a 2-0 victory over Al-Wakrah.

This achievement equals his goal tally from the previous 2023/24 season, where he finished as the league’s fifth top scorer.

His goals are instrumental in keeping Al Duhail at the top of the league table, currently holding a four-point lead over reigning champions Al Sadd, whom they will face in a crucial top-of-the-table clash on February 22nd.

He also won the golden boot during the 2022/23 campaign, leading his side to the title.

The criticism extends to his international career with the Harambee Stars. Despite being Kenya’s fourth-highest goal scorer with 30 goals, some argue he hasn’t replicated his club form on the international stage.

However, Kenya’s often inconsistent team performances are frequently beyond his individual control.

Olunga’s impressive club form and contributions to Al Duhail have seen him win multiple titles and establish himself as one of the highest-earning Kenyan footballers.
