Washington Spirit President of Soccer Operations and General Manager Mark Krikorian has praised Ugandan defender Shadia Nankya’s talent and potential following her historic move to the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) club.
“Shadia has shown great potential throughout her young professional career in Egypt,” Krikorian said.
“We expect her to be an important contributor to the Spirit throughout her tenure at the club.”
Nankya, who joins from Egyptian side Masar FC, becomes the first Ugandan female footballer to sign with an NWSL team.
Her performances at the CAF Women’s Champions League, where she was named in the tournament’s Best XI, and her leadership in Masar FC’s Egyptian Women’s Cup triumph showcased her defensive prowess and ability to excel on big stages.
Her arrival strengthens a Washington Spirit squad that finished second in the NWSL last season, setting new club records in wins (18), points (56), and goals (51).
With an eye on competing for the league title in 2025, the Spirit sees Nankya as a valuable addition to a defensive unit aiming to complement the club’s attacking firepower led by stars like Trinity Rodman.
Nankya, who will occupy an international slot on the team’s roster, has already expressed her excitement about the move, citing the world-class facilities and coaching as key factors in her decision.
She also hopes her journey will inspire young girls in Uganda and across East Africa to dream big and pursue football at the highest levels.
