Trabelsi Sets High Stakes for Tunisia: World Cup Qualification or Exit

Sami Trabelsi, the newly appointed coach of the Tunisian national football team, has made a bold declaration, setting the bar high for his second tenure.

During his official presentation by the Tunisian Football Federation on Friday, Trabelsi unequivocally stated that his primary objective is to lead the Eagles of Carthage to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and failure to achieve this goal will result in his immediate resignation.

“I will strive with the entire technical team to achieve what we hope for,” the 57-year-old Trabelsi affirmed. “The first objective of my contract with the Tunisian Football Federation is to qualify the team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and if we do not achieve this goal, I will immediately leave my position without hesitation.”

This marks Trabelsi’s second stint as Tunisia’s head coach, having previously led the team from 2011 to 2013. His past successes include a victory in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Sudan in 2011.

Trabelsi’s challenge begins immediately, with two crucial World Cup qualifying matches against Liberia and Malawi scheduled for March.

Tunisia currently leads Group H with 10 points after four matches, boasting a record of three wins and one draw. While they hold a strong position, Trabelsi is leaving no room for complacency.

Beyond World Cup qualification, Trabelsi is also tasked with revitalizing Tunisia’s continental performance.

The upcoming TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025, presents an opportunity for redemption after disappointing results in previous editions.

He will be under pressure to improve the team’s standing on the continental stage.

Trabelsi’s return to the national team comes 12 years after his first tenure, bringing with him a renewed sense of purpose and a clear mandate.
