Mercedes has officially launched its W16 challenger for the 2025 Formula 1 season, accompanied by a wave of optimism from team principal Toto Wolff, who believes the team has made significant “gains” in its pursuit of championship contention.

However, Wolff tempered expectations, acknowledging the intense competition and the need for Mercedes to operate at its “very best” to challenge for titles.

After a challenging period since the introduction of ground effect regulations in 2022, which saw Mercedes struggle to replicate its previous dominance, the team is determined to return to the forefront of Formula 1.

The 2024 season presented further hurdles with mid-season upgrades failing to deliver the anticipated performance, compounding the issues surrounding the W15.

The newly unveiled W16, featuring “wholesale changes” designed to address the inconsistencies of its predecessor, signifies a fresh start for the German marque.

Wolff expressed confidence in the team’s progress, stating, “We open an exciting new era in the story of our team and Mercedes-AMG in 2025. We are building on the incredible legacy of our heritage, and we can’t wait to go racing.”

He emphasized the relentless efforts of the team in Brackley and Brixworth during the winter, highlighting the commitment to challenging for victories on a consistent basis.

“Last season was incredibly competitive on the track and, whilst we took several wins, we are all focused on challenging for victories more consistently,” Wolff added.

While simulations indicate a “sizeable step” with the W16, Wolff remained cautious, emphasizing the relative nature of progress in a highly competitive field. “We have made gains in the off-season, but we will only know where we stand come the first race in Australia,” he said.

“It is going to be a highly competitive season. We saw last year just how close the field was. You couldn’t say race-to-race who would be at the front, and I expect this year to be even closer. We will have to be at our very best if we want to challenge for championships this season.”

The 2025 season marks the beginning of a new era for Mercedes, with rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli joining George Russell in the driver lineup following Lewis Hamilton’s departure to Ferrari.

Wolff expressed unwavering confidence in Russell’s ability to lead the team, highlighting his potential to contend for the Drivers’ Championship.

“George has proven that he is one of the very best drivers on the grid, capable of competing for the Drivers’ Championship if we can give him a car capable of doing so,” Wolff stated. “As the senior driver, he will help lead the team forward and support Kimi in his development.”

Antonelli, who has accumulated over 10,000 kilometers in F1 cars, is poised to embark on his debut season, with Wolff acknowledging the inevitable challenges of a rookie campaign.

“Kimi has all the necessary talent to achieve great things at the pinnacle of the sport, but this is a rookie season and there will inevitably be ups and downs,” he said. “We’re looking forward to that journey together though and helping him develop over the course of the year.”

The technical aspects of the W16, including the “wholesale changes” detailed by technical director James Allison, are crucial to Mercedes’ ambitions.

The team is aiming to eliminate the inconsistencies that plagued the W15, focusing on creating a more predictable and competitive car.
