Vipers SC return to action on Thursday with a tricky away fixture against Police at Kavumba Recreation Ground, aiming to extend their lead at the summit of the Uganda Premier League.

The Venoms currently top the standings with 43 points, three ahead of second-placed NEC, who will only be in action on Friday.

A win against Police would stretch their advantage to six points, putting more pressure on the chasing pack.

However, Vipers will be wary of a Police side desperate to end a frustrating winless streak. The reigning Big League champions sit 13th on the 16-team table with 20 points and are seven points above the relegation zone.

Their immediate focus will be securing points to avoid getting sucked into the survival battle.

Kavumba Fortress: Can Police Hold Their Ground?

One of Police’s biggest strengths this season has been their home form. The Cops have lost just once at Kavumba; a 2-1 defeat to Maroons drawing six and winning two.

They are a tough nut to crack on their own turf, making Vipers’ mission far from straightforward.

Simon Peter Mugerwa’s men have been involved in more draws than any other team this season, with 11 stalemates in 18 matches.

Their most recent result, a 1-1 draw away to Mbale Heroes, epitomised their struggles in turning solid performances into wins.

Against Vipers, they will need to be at their absolute best, and the return of key players like Ibrahim Ssengooba and Kevin Obua to the squad offers them a much-needed boost.

However, they will miss influential midfielder Augustine Kacancu, who is sidelined with an injury.

Vipers’ Ruthless Streak on the Line

Vipers travel to Kavumba in red-hot form, having won their last seven league matches, scoring 13 goals and conceding none. Their defensive resilience and attacking efficiency have been key to their title charge.

The Venoms have also been dominant on the road, winning seven consecutive away matches. They last dropped points away from home in September, drawing 0-0 with Lugazi.

Despite their strong record, John ‘Ayala’ Luyinda and Fred Muhumuza’s side showed some vulnerability in their last game, edging Mbarara City 1-0 thanks to an Allan Okello penalty.

It was a far-from-convincing performance, but Okello once again proved his worth with his 14th goal of the season.

The forward leads the golden boot race with three goals more than Express’ Sam Ssenyonjo and will be Vipers’ main weapon against a Police defense that has been stubborn at home.

The visitors will also welcome back defender Hillary Mukundane, who missed the Mbarara game due to suspension. However, Milton Karisa remains sidelined, while Isaac Ogwang is still recovering from injury.

History Favours the Venoms

Vipers have dominated this fixture in recent years, winning 13 of the last 20 league meetings. Police have only managed four victories, with three games ending in draws.

In the first-round encounter at Kitende, Vipers secured a 2-1 win, and they will be eager to complete the double over the struggling Cops.

Muhumuza acknowledges the challenge ahead but remains confident.

“It’s going to be another tricky tie against Police FC. We didn’t have the easiest of games against Mbarara City, and we know Kavumba is never an easy place to go. But the boys are in good mood, and we are hopeful,” he said.

What’s at Stake?

For Vipers, a win extends their lead at the top to six points and strengthens their title credentials. For Police, avoiding defeat would be a big statement in their fight to stay clear of the relegation zone.

With the stakes high and the conditions at Kavumba favoring a battle of grit, this promises to be an intense clash under the Thursday afternoon sun.
