The Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) has achieved another milestone in its journey towards global recognition with the World Professional Boxing Federation (WPBF) officially accepting its request for affiliation.
Following its recent recognition by the African Boxing Union (ABU), UBF’s standing on the international stage continues to grow.
On March 5, 2025, a letter from David Young, President of the WPBF, confirmed the acceptance of UBF as an official affiliate of the global boxing body.
This comes after the federation submitted key documents, including its Constitution, the National Sports Act 2023, and its Certificate of Recognition by Uganda’s National Council of Sports.
“We are confident in the legitimacy and credibility of the Uganda Boxing Federation’s operations,” stated David Young in his letter. “On behalf of the World Professional Boxing Federation, we are pleased to formally acknowledge and accept the UBF as an official affiliate of the WPBF.”
This recognition enhances the reputation of UBF, marking another chapter in the federation’s development since its inception.
With this affiliation, UBF will have opportunities to collaborate with WPBF to advance the sport of boxing within Uganda, including potential participation in international championships and exposure to a wider array of opportunities on the global stage.
“The partnership with WPBF signals a new era for professional boxing in Uganda,” said Moses Muhangi, President of the Uganda Boxing Federation. “It gives our athletes an avenue to compete at a higher level and strengthens our governance framework, which is essential for the sport’s sustainable growth.”
This move complements UBF’s recent recognition by the African Boxing Union (ABU), whose President, Houcine Houichi, also praised Uganda’s efforts to modernize boxing governance.
The relationship between UBF and ABU is expected to facilitate the hosting of ABU championship events in Uganda, presenting fresh opportunities for Ugandan boxers to compete internationally.
The WPBF’s decision to affiliate UBF also aligns with Uganda’s strategic vision to elevate its sporting programs, especially in boxing, and to integrate more deeply with international sporting bodies.
UBF’s recognition by both ABU and WPBF marks a significant turning point, indicating that Uganda’s boxing infrastructure is now recognized as both credible and capable on the global stage.
