Raducanu Roars into Miami Open Second Round After Commanding Victory

Emma Raducanu delivered a confident performance at the Miami Open, breezing past Japanese teenager Sayaka Ishii in straight sets to secure her place in the second round.

The British number two needed just over an hour to claim a decisive 6-2, 6-1 victory, marking her first professional win at the prestigious Miami tournament.

The 2021 US Open champion displayed a marked improvement from her first-round exit at Indian Wells earlier this month.

That tournament marked her return to competitive play following a distressing incident in Dubai, where she dealt with a stalker.

Speaking after the match, Raducanu expressed her satisfaction with her performance, stating, “I am really proud of how I competed. It hasn’t been easy for me coming into this but I feel I put in a good performance. I hadn’t won a match here before in my professional career. I am just so happy to now be able to score a win.”

While there were signs of early nerves, Raducanu quickly found her rhythm, breaking Ishii’s serve in the opening stages of the first set.

From that point onwards, she grew in confidence and control, dictating the play with her powerful groundstrokes.

Ishii, a promising 19-year-old, struggled to contain Raducanu’s aggression and was hampered by unforced errors, committing 12 in the first set alone compared to Raducanu’s six. This proved costly, allowing Raducanu to seize the initiative and close out the first set comfortably.

The second set saw Raducanu maintain her dominance. She raced to a 5-0 lead, showcasing her improved form and focused mindset. Despite a brief resistance from Ishii, Raducanu served out the set 6-1, securing a well-deserved victory.

Notably, Raducanu’s new coach, Vladimir Platenik, was absent from the court for this match. While the reasons for his absence were not immediately clear, Raducanu’s performance suggests she was well-prepared despite his absence.

Looking ahead, Raducanu faces a challenging second-round encounter against American eighth seed Emma Navarro. This match will be a significant test of her progress and a chance to build on the momentum gained from her opening victory.
